The Deseret News' four 1988 prep football most valuable players and 104 first-team all-state selections were honored Monday night at the annual Utah Football Coaches Association All-State Football Awards Banquet.
Alta running back Chad Knowles, Logan quarterback Todd Wilson, Millard running back Tilden Swallow, and South Summit quarterback Mark Rydalch were awarded the MVP trophies, while the others first-team all-state honorees - 27 players from each of the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A size classifications - received individual plaques.Also honored by the coaches association were the four head football coaches who led their teams to state high school titles this fall - Alta's Doug Berry, Logan's Perry Christensen, Millard's Dennis Alldredge and South Summit's Tom Crittenden.
Held at Salt Lake Community College, the banquet recognized the all-state players of both the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune. Deseret News Sports Editor Lee Benson served as master of ceremonies, while football coaches from Utah's universities and junior colleges helped to present and distribute the awards.
Co-sponsoring the banquet were Gart Brothers, Stevens-Brown and Converse.
