Deadline to register for the Christmas Outdoor Lighting Contest is Friday noon and judges will begin their search for the winners starting Saturday night.
Sponsored by the Deseret News, Utah Power & Light Co. and Intermountain Electrical Association, the contest is open to individual homes as well as neighborhoods throughout the Salt Lake Valley and South Davis areas. It is a revival of the popular Deseret News decoration contest that was held many years ago until the energy crises darkened neighborhoods and streets.Contest judges, members of the Illuminating Engineering Society, will review the entries for overall design and placement of lights. They will consider theme, originality and creativity, complexity, decorations to complement the lights, color coordination, artistic merit and overall visual impact, according to Dennis Wood, judging panel chairman.
A list of all registered homes and neighborhoods will be published exclusively in the Deseret News, and Utahns may use the list as a guide to view the decorations. Judging will be divided into several regions throughout Salt Lake County and north to include Farmington in Davis County.
Regional winners in the home category will have their choice of a 19-inch color TV, VCR or microwave. The grand prize winner will be awarded a 25-inch color TV from Granite Furniture Co.
