The Senate has passed a bill amending federal laws aiding elementary and secondary education, and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, a co-sponsor of the legislation, says millions of American schoolchildren will benefit.

In Utah 23,000 students are helped, Hatch estimated.The measure would fund magnet schools, improve the quality of education for minorities, increase bilingual education and re-authorize programs to help schools impacted by children of military, defense and other federal workers.

The measure would help schools fund education for the handi capped as well, he said.
