Young Utah heart-transplant recipient Whitney Ray Petersen was released from the hospital late Friday afternoon and must now undergo six to 12 months of post-operative recovery, said his mother, Cindy Petersen, in a telephone interview from California Friday.

The Murray family will now rent housing close to Loma Linda University Medical Center to accommodate twice weekly visits for testing that young Petersen will be required to make.Doctors at the hospital performed the transplant surgery Nov. 12, when Whitney Ray was just 2 1/2 weeks old. The operation gave the infant his only chance for life after he was diagnosed with a terminal heart condition.

Although Whitney Ray had the first bout with rejection of his new heart recently, doctors say he's in good condition.
