President Thomas S. Monson, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shakes hands with East German state and party leader Erich Honecker. President Monson presented Honecker Friday with a gift sculpture, "The Holy Family," and praised the East German government for its cooperation with church members. He thanked Honecker for his "untiring engagement for international understanding and cooperation." LDS leaders dedicated a new stake center in Dresden and a meetinghouse in Zwickau this week. Prresident Monson discussed allowing East German church members to serve missions and he asked permission for the church to use public parks and recreation areas for church activities. The church has approximately 3,700 members in East Germany.
