Approximately 600 Parkside Elementary School students spent Thursday morning at Hillcrest Junior High School, singing carols and watching movies while Mountain Fuel Supply Co. crews repaired a leaking gas line at the elementary school.
The leak was discovered at Parkside, 495 E. 5175 South, just after school began Thursday. It never posed any danger to students, said Julie Woodward, a spokeswoman for Murray School District.Police and fire units went to the school primarily to help herd the student body to the junior high school at 53rd South and State Street. Parkside food workers also moved some of the day's lunch supplies in anticipation of feeding their flock away from "home" - which they did.
However, Woodward said, the students were back in their own quarters about noon with little disruption in their schedule other than the unplanned carol fest and a brisk walk in the December cold.
Steven Smith is Parkside's principal.
