A consumer advocacy group, citing a possible health danger, urged the government Thursday to stop over-the-counter sales of quinine drug products used to treat leg cramps.

Public Citizen Health Research group, in a petition filed with the Food and Drug Administration, claimed quinine products are ineffective against leg cramps and can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening reactions. The group's call for a ban involved only non-prescription quinine products, not the prescription form of quinine or the quinine water used to make gin-and-tonics and other mixed drinks.
