Paul Roach, who in two years has led the University of Wyoming to back-to-back Western Athletic Conference football titles, has been named the 1988 WAC Coach of the Year.
The Cowboys swept the league's top honors for 1988. In addition to Roach's second straight Coach of the Year selection, Cowboys quarterback Randy Welniak was named the Offensive Player of the Year, tackle Pat Rabold was the Defensive Player of the Year and running back Dabby Dawson was named Tuesday as the Newcomer of the Year.Welniak, a fifth-year senior from Ord, Neb., nudged Utah sophomore quarterback Scott Mitchell for the offensive honors in voting by the head coaches. Welniak had six first-place votes and 14 points to Mitchell's three first-place and nine points.
The 61-year-old Roach received 14 first-place votes and 30 points in voting by the league's head coaches and athletic directors.
