A 3-year-old girl who has spent virtually her entire life in hospitals can expect to lead a normal, healthy life if her five-organ transplant succeeds and all goes well, doctors say.

Rolandrea Dodge of Fruitland, N.M., received a new liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine and part of a large intestine during the 161/2-hour operation that ended Tuesday afternoon. Her spleen also was removed in the experimental surgery. The operation went smoothly except for one episode when the chilled organs, which came from an unidentified young victim, were inserted into Rolandrea's 30-pound body, Dr. Satoru Todo said. Her body temperature dropped dramatically, and her heart stopped beating for about a minute.
