A cyclone swept from the Bay of Bengal into southern Bangladesh and part of India Tuesday and aid officials said there was no hope of evacuating hundreds of thousands of people from the path of the powerful storm. Officials said the cyclone's 100 mph winds began lashing coastal areas of the massive river delta shared by Bangladesh and India's West Bengal state early Tuesday evening and that several populated islands were completely underwater. Bangladesh officials said the storm appeared to be more severe than a 1970 cyclone that left more than 500,000 people dead.
