A Supreme Court justice who admitted reading a book during a robbery trial submitted his resignation Monday following widespread criticism of his courtroom manner.

Justice Patrick George O'Dea, 47, the youngest judge on the high court bench, sent his resignation to Governor Sir David Wilson, who accepted it effective April 4, officials said. The delay in the effective date was due to vacation time owed the judge, who has not heard a case since he disqualified himself in the robbery trial Nov. 9 following six days of testimony.

O'Dea, a New Zealand native, stepped down from the case after defense counsel publicly objected to his reading a book during testimony. The judge admitted reading during the proceedings.
