A Sunday boating accident on the Great Salt Lake claimed the life of a Logan man while his companion survived the hour-long ordeal in freezing water.
Dead is Mark Boyer, 28.Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. Curtis Johnson said Boyer and Peter Ricci, 25, were returning from Antelope Island in a small sailboat when the craft was caught sideways in the wind and capsized in Farmington Bay about 3 p.m. The men held onto the hull of the craft until it floated close enough to the emerging Antelope Island causeway to beach the boat.
Ricci walked along the causeway until he reached a house in west Syracuse where the Sheriff's Department was contacted about 4:15 p.m.
A helicopter was summoned to rescue Boyer who remained with the boat about one mile out on the causeway.
The men were taken to Humana Hospital Davis North where Ricci was treated and released. Boyer was transferred to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City where he died during the night. Both men suffered hypothermia, Johnson said.
Johnson said Ricci estimated the men were in the water for nearly 45 minutes before reaching the causeway. Boyer was unable to walk and had to be left with the boat while Ricci went for help. The men had sailed to the island earlier Sunday morning and were returning when the winds caught the small craft.
