- A Utah State University student who had no plans to enter the "Dead Elvis Look-Alike Contest" churned out 30 seconds of something akin to an Elvis performance and walked away with the top prize: A tuition-free quarter at the school.
Alberto Oquendo, 22, an advertising major from North Salt Lake, said he just dropped by to watch last week's contest, part of the USU homecoming week.
But, when he saw that few people had entered, he jumped on stage with a borrowed guitar and played a few bars from something resembling an Elvis Presley song.
Oquendo's performance lasted only about 30 seconds, and he made up his own words to "Heartbreak Hotel," said Wendy Weaver, a reporter for the student newspaper.
But he still was judged the best aspiring dead Elvis and won the tuition-free quarter.
