November is coming close to setting a record for snowfall this year, according to National Weather Service forecaster Bill Alder, and another storm is heading in Monday.

"This month sure hasn't been a turkey for the resorts," he said. The resort town of Alta has received 40 inches of new snow since late Friday afternoon, he explained. The average snowfall in November at Alta is 65 inches, and so far it has received 130 inches.

"The wind flow was just right," said Alder, setting the pattern for heavy snowfall at the resort. The snow fell about 3 inches per hour during the worst of the storm.

Other resorts cashed in on the storm also, with Snowbird receiving 30 inches, Brighton 23 inches, Park City and Deer Valley 12 inches, Snow Basin 6 inches and Sundance 4 inches.

The U.S. Forest Service Avalanche Forecast Center has classified the avalanche danger in Little Cottonwood Canyon as "high hazard", said Alder, with the greatest danger existing above 9,000 feet and on slopes steeper that 30 degrees.

Little Cottonwood Canyon closed at 10 p.m. Saturday night due to extreme avalanche danger, said a Utah Department of Transportation spokesperson. It was expected to open early Sunday morning.

Valley accumulations were less impressive, ranging from 8 inches in Centerville to half an inch in Cache Valley, he said.

Provo, Bountiful and Richfield received 4 to 6 inches, the Holiday area received 3, and Sandy and Coalville 2 inches.

Another storm about the same size as the last will move into northern Utah from the Gulf of Alaska on Monday.

"Expect several inches in the valleys and another 6 to 12 inches in the mountains," said Alder.

The weather will be partly cloudy on Sunday, with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s and lows in the teens and 20s in northern Utah. Southern Utah residents can expect clear skies Sunday, becoming partly cloudy Sunday night and Monday.

The extended outlook calls for partly cloudy skies Tuesday, and mostly clear skies Wednesday and Thursday, with patchy, morning fog in the northern valleys. The afternoon temperatures will range from the upper 30s through the lower 50s, and the overnight lows will be from the teens through the mid 20s.
