An Idaho man was recuperating Thursday at LDS Hospital after receiving a liver transplant.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said John Gardner, 28, Boise, was listed in critical but stable condition following the 12-hour surgery.Gardner, who had been on the hospital's waiting list for the transplant, received a phone call from the hospital Tuesday night informing him it had a suitable donor liver. He flew to Salt Lake City on a private plane.

The Ada County, Idaho, fund for medical indigents will pay for the transplant and much of the medical care afterward. The cost could run between $100,000 and $200,000.

Of the 14 people who have undergone liver transplants at LDS Hospital since 1986, 10 are still alive, a spokeswoman said.
