Inflation _ Officially 19 percent but believed to be 40 percent.

Chief imports _ Grain, iron and steel, motor vehicles and parts, chemical fertilizers.

Chief crops _ Rice, wheat, soybeans, cotton.

Population _ 1.08 billion (76 percent rural).
