William Proxmire said Friday he will continue to issue his "Golden Fleece" award despite his retirement from the Senate in January.

Proxmire, who has handed out the awards almost monthly to ridicule government spending he found to be wasteful, has been elected to the National Taxpayer's Union's board of directors and will now issue the "Fleece" under its auspices. In the past, the awards have been given for such endeavors as a federal grant to study why prisoners want to escape from jail.

Proxmire, 73, is a Democrat who will have served more than 31 years as a senator from Wisconsin when his term expires in January.
