Police said Friday a Peruvian journalist was killed and another was wounded in gangland-style attacks in a rebel-convulsed area near the Andean city of Ayacucho.

Gunmen Thursday shot Hugo Bustios Saavedra, a reporter for a best-selling news magazine, Caretas, in the face and chest, then threw a grenade that killed him instantly, police said.A second reporter, Eduardo Rojas Caceres of the Actualidad newspaper in Lima, tried to flee the gunmen but was shot and seriously wounded, police said.

The gunmen attacked the two journalists on the outskirts of Huanta, 31 miles north of Ayacucho.
