For many motorists entering Boise, Capitol Boulevard is their first glimpse of the City of Trees.
A $40,000 centennial gift from Boise Cascade Corp. will line the boulevard with 100 shade trees to reinforce that impression. The donation is the first received by the Boise Celebrations Committee Inc. for the state Centennial in 1990, said Fred Humpherys, treasurer for the group. The 100 trees mark the state's 100 years.
The trees are green ash, about 20 feet high, Boise Cascade Chief Executive John Fery said. Fery and Mayor Dirk Kempthorne planted the first tree Wednesday at the Union Pacific depot.
Boise Cascade also donated red oak seedlings to 30 elementary schools.
"The trees will provide a grand entrance for people driving into the city," Kempthorne said. "When these kids are big they can take their children to see these trees."
