An unidentified intruder beat and tried to sexually assault a Salt Lake woman in her home early Sunday, police reported.

The woman, 28, was outside her home in the area of 300 N. Quince St. shortly after midnight to look for her cat. When she returned inside, a man standing by the door told her not to say anything and to lock the door, according to a police report.The intruder, armed with a handgun, pushed her, hit her, kicked her and tried to force her to perform a sex act, the report said.

After a struggle, the assailant fled. He was described as about 5 feet 7 inches tall, about 25 years old, with dark brown, curly hair. He wore a long-sleeved, striped shirt, the woman told police.
