A Provo woman charged with stabbing her 2-year-old son April 22 has been found mentally competent to stand trial after undergoing treatment.
A trial date for Dixie A. Madsen, 34, who had been committed to the Utah State Hospital, will be set Nov. 25.Madsen was found mentally competent Monday during a competency hearing before 4th District Judge Boyd L. Park. Two psychiatrists who examined the defendant testified during the proceedings that she is now competent to be tried.
In May, Park committed Madsen to the hospital for treatment until she could be found competent to stand trial on charges of attempted second-degree murder, a second-degree felony.
Police reported they found the defendant's child, Brandon Madsen, with a knife wound to his chest after a neighbor reported a stabbing had occurred. The boy survived the incident and has since recovered.
