A spinning carnival ride collapsed at a county fair in south Florida on Wednesday night, killing a teenage girl and injuring at least six people, officials said.
One of the support arms of the mechanical ride, called "The Spider," snapped in half, sending passengers plunging to the ground strapped in their small pods, witnesses said. Debris hit some members of the crowd lined up at the Broward County Fair.Police spokesman William Garrett said Christy Schafale, 17, a passenger on the ride, died of head injuries suffered in the collapse.
"She was hit in the head by a passing car on the same ride," he said.
A 23-year-old man suffered a puncture wound in the chest and was listed in guarded condition at Hollywood Memorial Hospital.
Three children suffered bruises and were expected to be released shortly, a hospital spokesman said.
Two other people were slightly hurt and were treated and released at another area hospital, police said.
