A West Valley man accused in the shooting death of his wife last year has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder.

John J. Quas, 38, faces a trial April 4 before 3rd District Judge Kenneth Rigtrup.Quas is accused of shooting his wife, Susan Quas, 35, through the eye with a .44-caliber handgun on June 15, 1987.

Charges filed that month against Quas were dismissed after prosecutors failed to prove the woman's death was not a suicide.

But prosecutors, saying they had new evidence and new findings on old evidence, refiled the charges in July.

Quas, who failed to appear for a hearing in mid-October, is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail, according to jail records.
