Thieves made off with what was touted as the state's largest flag over the weekend, prompting the posting of a reward.
Beckstrand Management, which erected the 30-by-50-foot flag in front of its office complex on the Van Winkle Expressway at Ninth East, is offering $500 for information leading to the return of the flag, said spokeswoman Kelli Jaynes. The giant flag, which was hung on a 110-foot staff during a ceremony on Presidents Day 10 weeks ago, was probably stolen Sunday, Jaynes said. Thieves likely used a ladder and must have snipped through steel lanyards to loose the banner, she said.
The flag has grown into a patriotic symbol for the area, Jaynes said. Since the flag disappeared, Beckstrand has received more than 500 calls from concerned citizens, she said.
Replacing the huge Old Glory will cost $3,500 and require work crews and a crane to hoist it back on its staff. Hanging the flag initially took the efforts of five men, Jaynes said.
