An unidentified man driving a stolen car was killed Tuesday when he drove off a road after stealing $12 worth of gas and attempting to run from police.

Oregon State Police said a man driving a car with Utah plates drove away from a gas station in Ontario, Ore., without paying.The station owner phoned the license number to police who ran a check on the plates and discovered the car was stolen. State police in Ontario radioed ahead to Baker, asking officers to intercept the vehicle, which was westbound on I-84.

A Baker City police officer spotted the car as it pulled off the freeway and gave chase. But within seconds, the car went out of control on a curve and crashed, according to a state police spokesman in Baker. The accident occurred about 3:30 a.m.

The spokesman said the man carried no identification.
