Torrential monsoon rains and lashing winds killed at least five people and forced thousands to flee their homes in eastern Malaysia, officials said Monday.

Military forces were dispatched to the worst-hit areas in the coastal states of Kelantan and Pahang to bolster beleaguered rescue workers after monsoons wreaked havoc on the region for a third day.More than 10,000 people were evacuated and packed into schools and makeshift shelters where rescue workers supplied them with food and blankets.
