The armed forces have released an American who was detained for six days because he was caught drawing sketches of Panamanian military uniforms, an official of the U.S. Army Southern Command said Friday.

Southern Command spokesman William Ormsbee told United Press International that Panamanian authorities released Mark Conrad, 28, on Wednesday.Ormsbee said Panamanian military authorities violated the Panama Canal treaty by refusing to allow U.S. officials to visit Conrad after his arrest, and by taking eight hours to notify the U.S. Army.

"Southern Command officials have protested the actions of the Panama Defense Forces," Ormsbee said.
