Boy Scouts throughout Utah will be "Scouting for food" Saturday, hoping to collect 240 tons of food for the poor.
About 117,000 Scouts will go house to house collecting non-perishable food items for the poor. The Scouts dropped off special bags for the food at homes through Utah last week. Utahns are asked to fill the bags with donated food, and the Scouts will pick them up Saturday. Those who didn't receive bags but would like to participate can fill any bag with food, label it "Scouts" and set the bag outside their front door, said Larry Lunt, chairman of the Scouting For Food Drive, Great Salt Lake Council.
The drive is nationwide, with more than a million Scouts participating. Salt Lake Scouts participated last year, collecting 60 tons of food. This year marks the first statewide Scouting drive and officials hope to quadruple last year's collection.
