Tala Yaqoub, secretary general of the hard-line Palestine Liberation Front, died of a heart attack Thursday in a military hospital, sources in the Palestine Liberation Organization said.

Yaqoub, 49, was in Algiers for last weekend's meeting of the Palestine National Council, the Palestinian parliament-in-exile. He became ill Thursday and went to the Algiers military hospital.As secretary general, Yaqoub was nominal head of the group whose most well known leader is Mohammed Abu Abbas, convicted mastermind of the hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro in 1985.
