About 50 people claimed victory Thursday and ended a five-day fast aimed at forcing officials to rehire the last of about 100 workers dismissed for roles in Poland's worst labor unrest in seven years.

Agreement was reached through the mediation of the Roman Catholic bishop in Katowice, said Adam Slomka, a spokesman for the fasters protesting since Saturday in the Christ the King Cathedral in the southern city."We managed to achieve in five days what hadn't been achieved in several months," said Slomka, speaking by telephone from the cathedral.
