Bangladeshi President Hussain Ershad appealed to the world community Wednesday to help reconstruction efforts in his country, devastated by two months of floods that affected 49 million people.

Ershad said at a special U.N. meeting that the destruction caused by flooding in August and September was "beyond the capacity of a least-developed country like Bangladesh to bear."Ershad came to New York seeking U.S. government and U.N. aid for millions of people left homeless by the floods, in which Bangladeshi authorities say 2,100 people died.
