Lee Allen, Merrill Cook's lieutenant governor running mate, was born in the Phillipines. His family was taken prisoner during World War II by the Japanese and he spent the war in a concentration camp.

Allen, 50, lived in California from 1946 to 1956, when he was admitted to West Point. A career military officer, he served throughout the world. He served during the Vietnam War as an advisor to U.S. combat troops. He taught at West Point, served with United Nations troops in Syria during the Yom Kippur War and was an intelligence officer in the Pentagon.

Allen retired in 1980 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He moved back to Utah County, where his family had a home since his mother was dean of nursing at Brigham Young University. His legal residence has been in Utah since 1960.

Allen is a self-employed publisher. For almost two years he has been publishing and writing The Free Citizen, a monthly newpaper of political thought about Utah and the national government. He is married and has five children.
