Utah State football coach Chuck Shelton said he was approached by Kansas State but is not a candidate to fill the Wildcats' head coaching vacancy.

"I am not going to Kansas State," Shelton said Tuesday night. He had been rumored to be among finalists for the post.Shelton said he talked to Steve Miller, K-State athletic director, about the opening shortly after Coach Stan Parrish announced his resignation last month.

"It's one of those rumors that probably would have had some foundation earlier," Shelton said. "But it was eliminated early as a possibility.

"It's almost a natural thing that when (coaching openings) come up in the Midwest, my name comes up because of my background," said Shelton, a native of Rolla, Mo., and a former coach at Drake in Iowa.

"But this is where I belong and where I need to be," he said. "I came (to USU) to be here a while."

Shelton is 12-20 at USU, including 4-6 this season. Kansas State was 0-10-1 in 1987 and is 0-10 this year.
