Former Utah Gov. Scott M. Matheson has been named chairman of development for the commission to place a statue of Utahn Philo T. Farnsworth in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Bruce Barnson, chairman for the Philo T. Farnsworth Statuary Hall Commission, announced the appointment and said the commission's goal is to raise $250,000 to place the statue in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall."I am honored to chair the fund-raising committee for the Philo T. Farnsworth Statuary Hall Commission," said Matheson. "Placing a statue of Mr. Farnsworth in Washington, D.C., represents Utah's spirit of scientific and humanitarian achievement."
The life-sized statue will be sculpted by Utah artist James Richard Avati and is scheduled to be presented to Congress in 1990. A second edition of the statue will be placed in the Utah State Capitol building.
Donations are being received by the Philo T. Farnsworth Statuary Hall commission, 617 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, 84102.
