A Roy man died Saturday after the car he was driving slammed head on into another vehicle - an accident that set off a fiery chain reaction that involved three other vehicles.
David H. Williams, 52, was westbound on Riverdale Road about 7:40 p.m. when his car crossed the center line and struck a car being driven by William B. Stephens, 43, Riverdale, said Riverdale Police Chief Glenn Clary.Stephens, who was in a left turn lane at the time, was not injured.
Another car being driven by Randall B. Blake, 35, Roy, was also westbound on Riverdale Road and slammed on his brakes to avoid the crash and was rear-ended by a flat-bed truck driven by Leslie W. Sawyer, 20, Layton. Sawyer's wife Deann L. Sawyer, 19, was following in a third vehicle and slammed into the rear of her husband's truck.
The car caught fire, but Leslie Sawyer was able to pull his wife and 8-month-old daughter, who was buckled in a car seat, from the car. Deann Sawyer was in fair condition at St. Benedict's Hospital. Neither Leslie Sawyer, his daughter or Blake were injured.
The investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing and alcohol may have been involved, Clary said.
