A Mormon couple, Laura and Moises Escobar, face the deportation of the husband under a new anti-fraud immigration law. The two were married in the Washington LDS Temple in June 1987.
Moises Escobar, a native of El Salvador, is in the U.S. illegally, officials say, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service has been attempting to deport him. Although spouses of U.S. citizens are generally granted entry, a new law denies that right to the spouse that marries a U.S. citizen while an illegal immigrant. Both Escobars are employed at the Washington Temple.
The couple has brought suit against the INS to halt deportation proceedings.
The law was passed by Congress to halt "sham" marriages by illegal immigrants.
