A PTL pastor says he is ashamed that he helped the ministry take people's contributions and spend it on hotels, trains, a water slide and palm trees while a "world missionary effort" was being canceled.

The Rev. Sam Johnson, speaking Sunday at PTL's Heritage Village Church, apologized for contributing to the actions and attitudes that eventually brought on the financial collapse of PTL, which was ordered liquidated last week to pay creditors.

"This is idolatry," said Johnson. "A great deal of what we have done here was not ministry it was a scam. The sooner we admit it was a scam, the sooner we can get on with the real business of propagating the gospel."
