Like many other Americans, residents here don't have to look very far to find hunger and poverty.

One out of 10 Long Islanders goes hungry every day, according to Long Island Cares. To combat the problem, there are more than 150 feeding programs on the island, one of which is Long Island Cares. It was founded in 1980 by the late singer-songwriter Harry Chapin and says it distributes more than 2 million meals a year. The program now is headed by Chapin's wife, Sandy.
