While the city's new Main Street is drawing praise from officials and merchants, all of that new, smooth concrete is attracting young skateboarders.

Bountiful Police Chief Larry D. Higgins has told his officers to start cracking down on skateboarders who take to the street or practice skateboard tricks on the new downtown planters and benches."They have been jumping up on the rim of the new planters and finished benches. We have a great deal of concern for the youths' safety," Higgins said.

Bountiful police have been instructed to enforce an ordinance that prohibits skateboards on streets. While the city has no ordinance to keep skateboarders off sidewalks, the police can file criminal mischief charges or vandalism complaints against skateboarders if the planters or benches are damaged, Higgins said.
