A new toll-free hotline that provides the public important information on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has been established by the American Lung Association.

The hotline consists of a 24-hour nationwide toll-free phone number with automatic response service. A caller with a touch tone or rotary dial phone will be able to hear one of five taped messages on emphysema or chronic bronchitis. The taped messages include a discussion of prevention, treatment, background of disease, and where to get more information.

The hotline number, 1-800-999-LUNG, was made possible by a grant from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc.
