Emma Thomas, who was believed to be the oldest known living person, has died at the age of 117. The Guinness Book of World Records lists a 112-year-old Miami woman, and a Guinness spokesman said the editors now have documentation on a 113-year-old woman living in France. But Thomas was believed to be 117 when she died Friday of old age at the Maryland Manor in suburban Baltimore, a nursing home where she had lived for the past four years, said Harriet Hines, 91, her oldest daughter. The former Emma Broadwater was born in Maryland near the Magothy River. She was married at 15 to Frank Hankins who died in 1920 after the couple had a dozen children. After his death, she lived in a home in Pumphrey, Md., supporting her family by picking vegetables, doing domestic work and taking in laundry. In her 60s, she married again to Steven Thomas, who died in 1947.
