Three counts of forcible sexual abuse and one of sexual exploitation have been filed against a former Clearfield High School speech and drama teacher.

Norman Arthur Maxfield, 44, of Clinton, is accused in a 2nd Circuit Court complaint of fondling a 16-year-old boy and two 17-year-old boys who participated in Christmas plays at the school. The 16-year-old said he was abused in 1986 and the other two said they were fondled a year later.

Prosecutors say that each boy was told to undress for his costume fitting and then was fondled. In two of the cases, Maxfield also is accused of saying obscenities to the boys.

One boy told police he was instructed to stand in a certain area of the dressing room while he was fitted for the costume. According to court documents, he told police that he noticed a video camera was filming the costume fitting.

Prosecutors say one of the boys later surreptitiously removed the tape from the drama department and viewed it, and the tape depicted two boys being fondled.

Mel Miles, personnel director of the Davis School District, said Maxfield resigned on Sept. 14, four days after he was arrested. He had worked for the district since August 1974.

Maxfield has waived his preliminary hearing and the case has been bound over to 2nd District Court. A date for his first appearance in district court was not immediately set.

Each charge against Maxfield is a second-degree felony and carries a possible penalty of one to 15 years in prison.
