A court Saturday sentenced one Mafia criminal to life imprisonment and 52 others to a total of 650 years in prison in the second mass trial of Palermo area Mafia families.

The sentencing followed a trial of 79 defendants from provincial Mafia gangs in the outlying areas of Palermo. The trial lasted just under a year and took place in the fortress courtroom built as an annex to Palermo's Ucciardone prison.The courtroom was also the site of the largest mass trial ever of Sicilian Mafia members, in which 456 defendants were tried in 21 months ending Dec. 16. Nineteen mobsters received life prison terms and 338 were sentenced to a total of 2,655 years in prison.
