"Bergen-Belsen, Malthausen, Auschwitz . . . ." The black-garbed rabbi's voice broke in the Frankfurt, Germany, synagogue as he recited the names of the Nazi slaughterhouses that entombed millions of Europe's Jews. The moment probably did more to capture the essence of the Jewish tragedy than all the speeches made at all the ceremonies in West Germany, the German Democratic Republic and in Austria to commemorate Kristallnacht. The 50th anniversary memorial gatherings end on Thursday when the West German parliament commemorates Kristallnacht.
