At least 10 inmates were hurt, two critically, in what deputy sheriffs said was a racially motivated riot that raged for nearly an hour Wednesday night at an overcrowded jail, authorities said.

Several inmates were stabbed and one fell from a cell block balcony during the violence that erupted about 8:25 p.m. at the El Cajon Detention Facility, Lt. Bob Trevino said."We consider this a major riot," said San Diego County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Lynch.

Sheriff's officials said about a dozen deputies on duty at the jail regained control about 9:30 p.m. None of the deputies was hurt.
