An official Vietnamese newspaper Thursday called on President-elect George Bush to help end the war in Cambodia and establish diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam.

The Communist Party daily Nhan Dan said the new administration should contribute to "the search for a fair and reasonable political solution to the Kampuchean (Cambodian) issue and eventually to the building of a peaceful, independent, democratic, sovereign, neutral and non-aligned Kampuchea, and establishing normal relations and mutually beneficial cooperation with Vietnam and other Indochinese countries."The United States has said it will not consider normalizing relations until Vietnam ends its decade-old military occupation of Cambodia. It also wants a resolution of the fates of Americans missing in action from the Vietnam war.
