Al Seethaler, an 18-year KUTV veteran and the station's station manager since 1981 and vice president since 1983, is leaving Utah television for a new job in Denver.
Seethaler confirmed Wednesday that he has accepted an offer from CBS affiliate KMGH-TV in Denver to be the vice president and general manager there effective Jan. 1. He said he will remain at KUTV through the end of the year.Born and raised in Utah, the 46-year-old Seethaler said he will miss Salt Lake City. "But you get to a point in your life when you say, `Do I want to keep doing what I've been doing for a long time, or do I want some new challenges?' " Seethaler said.
That's why Seethaler chose not to re-sign with KUTV when his contract expired earlier this year. "I figured that if I stayed at KUTV for five more years I'd probably end up staying here for the rest of my career," he said. "This is the world's greatest job, but I just couldn't see myself doing it for 20 years or so. I need a new set of challenges."
So when an unsolicited offer came from KMGH - "a great offer," Seethaler said - he took it. But not without "a lot of soul-searching."
"Salt Lake is probably one of the best television markets in the country," Seethaler said. "Jackie (his wife) and I have a lot of good friendships here, and it's going to be hard not to continue them. But it's time to move on." - J.W.
