Shoppers who witnessed a man grab a woman's purse at a supermarket chased and cornered the man until police arrived and arrested him - even though he was wielding a knife, police say.
Salt Lake County deputy sheriffs arrested and jailed a 27-year-old Salt Lake man Saturday for investigation of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and simple assault.According to a sheriff's report, a man approached a woman's shopping cart Saturday afternoon at Harmon's Supermarket, 974 E. Fort Union, grabbed a purse and attempted to flee. The woman attempted to stop him, but he shoved her and pushed a shopping cart into her, injuring her foot.
The man fled into the parking lot, and several people followed him. One man Attempted to take the purse away from him. The fleeing man punched the witness, dropped the purse and continued to run, the report said.
Three witnesses continued to pursue the man into an apartment complex. The man then turned and, holding a knife, said, "Come on." The witnesses persuaded him to throw the knife aside and wait for police.
