Israeli troops Tuesday shot and wounded an American free-lance photographer during a clash with Palestinian rioters in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus, Arab hospital officials said.

It was the first time a foreign journalist has been wounded with live ammunition since the 10-month-old Arab uprising began. The army spokesman's office in Jerusalem had no immediate comment on the report. U.S. Consulate official Mark Foulon said the report was being checked.

Doctors at Nablus' Al Ittihad Hospital identified the wounded man as Neal Cassidy, 37, of Oakland, Calif., and said he was hit in the right knee.
