Children at a religious center where an 8-year-old girl allegedly was beaten to death were routinely hit up to 800 times each with paddles or electric cords while others were forced to count, authorities said.

Circuit Judge Patrick Gilroy granted custody of 55 children to the state Children Services Division on Monday after the Clackamas County Juvenile Department presented the allegations of beating by staff members of the California-based religious center.Dayna Lorea Broussard was dead when four men connected with the center brought her to a fire station Friday. She had been beaten and whipped severely, officials said.
